South Korea's national football team will play six international matches under an interim coach before the 2027 Asian Cup opens in January.
The Korea Football Association (KFA) held its first board meeting (the sixth session) at the Football Center in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the 24th, chaired by acting president Lee Yong-soo, and finalized the interim coach selection process.
The interim coach's contract runs through the November international match window, covering six evaluation matches under the interim system—four in September and October, and two in November.
The Asian Cup opens on January 7 in Saudi Arabia. The permanent coach, who will be appointed before the tournament, will have to head into the competition without properly testing players in actual matches during the international match window.
The board decided to select the interim coach through an open recruitment process, as specified in the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee's "Regulations on National Team Selection and Operation." The open recruitment will bundle the coach and coaching staff together, with the detailed schedule and conditions of the recruitment process to be announced later.
The board approved the formation of an election management committee composed of external figures from academia, the legal community, and the media for the next KFA president election. The association said, "The election management committee will begin full-scale activities once the president election date is confirmed after the procedures to revise the association's articles and the president election management regulations are completed." It added, "We plan to establish an expanded electorate and election system by closely reviewing the FIFA statutes, the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee statutes and member sports organization regulations, and matters discussed with the 'K Football Innovation Committee.'"
