One person was killed and two others were injured in separate fires at homes early on the 24th, the first day of the Chuseok holiday.
According to fire authorities, a fire broke out at about 3:19 a.m. on the rooftop of a two-story house in Magok-dong, Gangseo-gu, Seoul. After receiving a report that flames were coming from the roof, firefighters deployed 17 vehicles and 58 personnel and extinguished the blaze at about 3:42 a.m., roughly 23 minutes later.
A man in his 60s who lived in the rooftop unit died in the fire. No other casualties were reported and no residents had to evacuate, authorities said. Fire officials are investigating the exact point of origin and the cause, noting that flames had already spread inside the rooftop unit and were shooting out of the windows when crews arrived.
Another fire broke out at about 5:48 a.m. the same day at a four-story villa — a low-rise multi-unit home, distinct from a luxury villa — in Gajwa-dong, Seohae-gu, Incheon. A man in his 40s who lived in the building suffered burns, and a woman in her 50s was taken to a hospital after inhaling smoke. Both were classified as having minor injuries.
One unit on the third floor of the building was completely destroyed, while the hallway and other units were burned or scorched. Police and fire authorities believe the fire started on the third floor and plan to investigate the exact cause.
