Seoul's Gangbuk District is running its Smart Farm Center hands-on program for elementary and middle school students through Nov. 11.
A total of 326 students in 16 classes from 11 elementary and middle schools in the district are taking part. At the Smart Farm Center and an adjacent growing complex, the students learn how smart farms automatically manage the growing conditions of crops, along with ways to respond to the climate crisis and protect the environment.
In the first half of the year, the district ran similar programs for 370 elementary school students, including strawberry harvesting and cooking, soap making and building terrariums, small indoor plant gardens.
"I hope that by experiencing a local smart farm firsthand, students will broaden their understanding of future farming technology and also come to appreciate the value of the environment," Gangbuk District Mayor Jung Chang-soo said.
