
NAJU — Korea Institute of Energy Technology, known as KENTECH, has posted the highest early admissions competition ratio since it opened, as the Honam region emerges as a base for advanced industries combining semiconductors, energy and artificial intelligence. The surge is read as reflecting expectations for a semiconductor belt in the southwestern region and the appeal of KENTECH's research-centered model for training talent, drawing interest from top science and engineering students.
A total of 3,113 students applied for 100 spots in early admissions for the 2027 academic year, producing a final ratio of 31.13 to 1, the university said on Sept. 14. That is up about 28% from 24.33 to 1 a year earlier and marks the highest ratio since the school opened in 2021.
The result goes beyond a single admissions cycle. It is being read as a sign that the Honam region is emerging as a new axis on South Korea's advanced industry map, in step with the government's push to build a semiconductor belt in the southwest.
The country's semiconductor industry has been concentrated in the greater Seoul area and a handful of other hubs. But once a semiconductor cluster in Honam gets fully under way, the region could move beyond serving as a production base to become an ecosystem for advanced industries that combine semiconductors, energy and AI.
KENTECH sits at the center of that shift.
The university began as a research-focused school specializing in energy, but the center of gravity in its teaching and research has already been expanding toward the kind of cross-disciplinary training the next generation of the semiconductor industry demands. Competitiveness in semiconductors is no longer determined by process technology alone. The ability to combine AI, power, materials, energy efficiency and carbon-neutral technologies is emerging as the core strength.
That is where KENTECH's strengths lie. From the undergraduate level, it has built a research-centered environment for advanced study in future energy engineering fields including energy AI, advanced energy materials, next-generation grids, hydrogen energy, environmental and climate technology, and nuclear energy.
Students do not stop at theory. They take part in research from their undergraduate years, extending their interests through experiments and projects. As a result, more than 90% of the first graduating class went on to graduate school at the university to continue their research.
That shows KENTECH is establishing itself not simply as a university that admits freshmen but as a platform that continuously produces the research talent future industries require.
The university is expected to become a core foundation of the Honam region's advanced industry ecosystem, serving as a hub for training talent that connects semiconductors, energy and AI.
The school attributes the record ratio to a combination of government policy to nurture advanced industries, expectations for the southwestern semiconductor belt and its own research-centered education model.
