ULSAN — Ulju County has invested 3.1 billion won ($2.2 million) to build the Ulju Park Golf Course, the area's first 36-hole facility, on unused railway land in Gosan-ri, Onyang-eup, with full operations set to begin in January next year.
The course, developed through a public competition for idle railway property, will be completed this month and enter trial operation from October.
Although the project site falls within a restricted development zone, the county cited user surveys to explain the shortage of park golf courses and the need for a 36-hole facility, and won approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport after a railway safety review.
Nearby Namchang Station and the Oegosan Onggi Village make the site easily accessible, and officials expect the course to be used in connection with local tourism assets such as the Onggi Festival.
Ulsan currently has seven park golf courses in operation, including those in Beomseo and Cheongnyang and at Grand Park, Taehwa River and Dongcheon.
