INCHEON — The city of Incheon is seeking to designate Sammok Port in Yeongjong District as a new regional fishing harbor and has begun drawing up a comprehensive harbor development plan.
Sammok Port is currently classified as a fishing village harbor and has drawn repeated calls for improvement because it lacks shelter facilities where boats can take refuge in bad weather, as well as permanent berthing space.
The city plans to finalize the designation as a regional fishing harbor after consultations with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, based on the results of a feasibility study conducted in March.
Across the roughly 100,000 square meters that make up the Sammok Port area, the city will expand safe-refuge facilities and berthing infrastructure while pursuing waterfront development and projects linked to fishing village tourism.
The city recently held a briefing marking the start of the contracted work on the harbor development plan, attended by Yeongjong District, the Incheon branch of the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, local fishing village associations and a shipowners' association.
