Bae, Kim & Lee, a Korean law firm, said Monday that it will adopt the global legal artificial intelligence (AI) platform "Harvey."
Harvey is a large language model (LLM) that automates tasks such as legal document analysis and contract review. It is reportedly used by a majority of the top 10 law firms in the United States.
Bae, Kim & Lee said it has confirmed high utilization and work efficiency in legal research, document drafting, and multilingual material analysis after using Harvey in select departments. The firm plans to expand Harvey into a work platform used by all members. It is the first among major domestic law firms to build a system enabling all its members to use a global legal AI platform.
"In areas where Bae, Kim & Lee holds strengths, such as cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A), international disputes, and global regulatory response, the firm will be able to analyze large volumes of multilingual documents and the laws and precedents of various countries more quickly and systematically," the firm explained.
Regarding security issues and the problem of "AI hallucination" arising from AI use, a Bae, Kim & Lee official said, "We will ensure that input data is not used for AI model training, and we will thoroughly manage the input of sensitive information and implement cross-review procedures by lawyers for the outputs." The official added, "AI is merely a tool that assists lawyers' professional judgment; the final legal judgment and responsibility rest with the lawyers."
Lee Jun-ki, managing partner at Bae, Kim & Lee, said, "As AI takes on repetitive and voluminous work, our experts will focus on strategy and judgment to provide clients with faster and more sophisticated advice."
