South Korea's Marine Corps conducted a live-fire maritime drill on the 21st from northwestern islands near the Northern Limit Line, the de facto sea border with North Korea in the Yellow Sea.
The 6th Brigade, based on Baengnyeong Island, and the Yeonpyeong Unit, stationed on Yeonpyeong Island, carried out the exercise that afternoon, according to the Northwestern Islands Defense Command.
The drill involved weapons assigned to the units, including K9 self-propelled howitzers and Chunmoo multiple rocket launchers. About 200 rounds were fired at simulated targets at sea.
"This was an annual, defensive exercise carried out in our waters south of the NLL, with unit-assigned weapons such as Chunmoo and K-9 self-propelled howitzers taking part," the Marine Corps said.
It was the third such drill in the northwestern islands this year, following exercises in February and July.
The drills, once held three to four times a year, were suspended under the Sept. 19 inter-Korean military agreement signed in 2018. They resumed in June 2024 after the Yoon Suk-yeol administration decided to fully suspend the agreement.
