Prime Minister Han Seong-sook said on the 8th that the government will introduce a class-action system covering all consumer sectors and create a new mechanism allowing courts to order businesses to submit documents. "We will make it possible for consumers to achieve genuine redress even when large-scale harm occurs," Han said.
Han made the remarks in opening comments at the 17th Consumer Policy Committee meeting held at the Government Complex Seoul, saying the government will "build a comprehensive framework for protecting consumer rights that leaves no gaps." Han also said the government will "establish an artificial intelligence-based market monitoring environment and expand the application of MyData to all sectors to strengthen consumers' sovereignty over their own data."
Han added that the government will "strengthen safety management for products closely tied to daily life, such as electrical appliances and children's products, as well as for food." Han also pledged to "prevent false and exaggerated eco-friendly labeling and foster an environmentally friendly consumption ecosystem, including support for stores using single-use containers to switch to reusable ones."
To that end, Han said the government has drawn up the 7th Basic Plan for Consumer Policy, which lays out a new blueprint for consumer policy. "Through this, we will focus on strategies to achieve our vision of a safe and trusted market in the AI era, and consumer sovereignty completed through everyone's participation," Han said.
