The government decided Thursday to build a semiconductor cluster in the Honam region on the site of Gwangju's military airport.
Kang Hoon-sik, Presidential Chief of Staff, announced the decision in a briefing after a "Mega Project Public-Private Joint Review Meeting" held at Cheong Wa Dae. "Today's meeting focused on the semiconductor field, which is set to receive the largest-scale investment among the mega projects," Kang said. "Companies presented their view that among candidate locations in the Honam region, the Gwangju military airport is the most suitable site."
He explained, "The Gwangju military airport can secure a 2.5 million-pyeong site, and because of the nature of an airport, leveling has already been completed, offering the advantage of minimizing the site construction period." He added, "Its proximity to downtown Gwangju and the KTX also gives it strengths in terms of securing manpower and living conditions." He then said, "Accordingly, at today's meeting we decided to build the Honam region semiconductor industrial complex on the Gwangju military airport site."
