Chung Chung-rae, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, highlighted the achievements of the Lee Jae-myung government on its first anniversary, saying, "Please give generous applause to the president who works day and night." In political circles, observers say he could step down as party leader as early as that day and formalize a bid for re-election.
At a Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly on Wednesday, Chung personally held up a promotional board titled "One Year of Achievements of the Lee Jae-myung Government," installed in front of the party leader's office. "We have well organized the achievements of the Lee Jae-myung government, which lacks nothing—whether in economy, diplomacy, or communication," he said. "The achievements of the past year are enormous."
"We restored the research ecosystem through 35.5 trillion won in research and development (R&D) investment, and the most remarkable achievements were in the fields of diplomacy, security, and trade," he said. "President Lee Jae-myung returned to the international diplomatic stage immediately upon taking office, signaling that the Republic of Korea is a normal state, and exports also increased on the back of successful Korea-U.S. tariff negotiations."
He added, "We also injected vitality into the livelihood economy, the cumulative number of users of the Modu's Card surpassed 5 million, and the burden of public transportation costs was greatly eased. I am truly proud of the Lee Jae-myung government, which achieved these results in just one year."
Chung said, "Only when the Lee Jae-myung government succeeds can the Republic of Korea succeed, balanced national development can be achieved, and K-democracy can also blossom." He added, "I ask for the people's strong support and encouragement. Please also give generous applause to President Lee, who works day and night."
