WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump said he would scrap tariffs on Irish whiskey during a visit to Ireland.
Speaking on the 13th at an awards ceremony for the Irish Open golf tournament, held at his own golf course in Doonbeg, Trump said he had spoken with Ireland's prime minister and tournament winner Shane Lowry, and that everyone had pressed him on the issue. He said they had asked him to remove the tariffs imposed on Irish whiskey.
Trump then said that on behalf of the United States he would withdraw the tariffs on Irish whiskey, drawing cheers from the audience.
The U.S. government imposes a 15% tariff on imports from the European Union, and Irish whiskey is subject to the same 15% rate. No specific timetable was announced for when the tariffs would be lifted.
