U.S. President Donald Trump reiterated his pledge to pay every adult American a $5,000 dividend and urged voters to back Republicans in the coming midterm elections.
In a post on the social media platform Truth Social on the 11th, Trump said that thanks to the country's enormous economic growth and investment success, a $5,000 Trump dividend would be paid to every adult American. He said the policy was drawing criticism from "Dumocrats" who hoped it would never come to pass, but that it would certainly be carried out.
He went on to point to the passage of the large tax-cut bill he pushed through over opposition-party objections, and to what he described as the success of special payments of $1,776 to U.S. service members, an amount marking the year of the country's founding in 1776.
"When I say something, I mean it," Trump said, adding that the $5,000 dividend was something Americans deserved and would therefore be delivered. He then called on voters to support Republicans.
Trump had unveiled the pledge on the 9th in a keynote speech on the opening day of a Republican midterm election convention in Dallas, Texas.
Democrats have pushed back strongly. California Governor Gavin Newsom said Trump was trying to buy votes with blood money drawn from taxpayers, while Representative Dan Goldman called it a corrupt and flagrantly illegal act of vote-buying.
