
HD Hyundai (267250.KS) has won recognition for its proprietary technology in barge-mounted power plants, known as floating power stations at sea.
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (009540.KS), the intermediate shipbuilding holding company of HD Hyundai, said on the 15th that it recently obtained approval in principle from the American Bureau of Shipping for a 100-megawatt barge-mounted power plant.
A barge-mounted power plant generates electricity at sea using power generation engines. It is used for data centers and industrial complexes where building onshore power infrastructure is difficult or where large-scale electricity demand arises.
Through the approval, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering received certification for core technologies required to build the facility, including basic conceptual design, electrical single-line diagrams and hull stability reviews.
The company's in-house developed plant can reliably supply up to 100 megawatts of electricity based on its mid-sized HiMSEN engines. The company plans to enter the market in earnest after completing detailed design work and follow-up certification procedures.
Market interest in barge-mounted power plants has been expanding steadily. Global electricity demand is rising rapidly amid the spread of artificial intelligence technology and the expansion of data centers, while onshore power plant construction faces limits from difficulties in securing sites and from environmental regulations.
