Hankook Tire & Technology (161390) has installed a 5-megawatt solar power system at its plant in Geumsan, Chungcheongnam-do.
The company said on the 3rd that it built the 5 MW self-consumption solar array at the Geumsan plant and plans to develop the site into a hub for clean energy production.
The panels were mounted on the rooftops of a raw materials building and a finished goods warehouse completed last year. Capacity totals 5 MW, with 2.7 MW on the raw materials building and 2.4 MW on the finished goods warehouse.
The Geumsan array generates about 6.6 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity a year. All of that power is consumed within the plant, and the company expects the system to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 3,061 tons annually.
The project was carried out through a Korea Environment Corporation program that supports carbon-neutral facilities at companies covered by the country's emissions trading scheme.
Hankook Tire is also adding solar capacity at major overseas production bases. It operates a roughly 1 MW self-consumption array at its plant in Chongqing, China, and a 0.66 MW system on a parking lot roof at its Jiaxing plant in China.
Its plant in Rácalmás, Hungary, is expanding renewable energy use through a long-term power purchase agreement. The company plans to keep increasing the share of renewable energy at sites at home and abroad to reach net zero by 2050.
