Taihan Cable & Solution (001440) is accelerating its push into the global power grid market after winning a contract to build power infrastructure for an artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Australia.
Taihan said Wednesday it had won a turnkey project to build the power grid for an AI data center, ordered by Transgrid, Australia's largest transmission authority. The contract is valued at approximately 45 billion won.
The project aims to reliably supply large-scale power to an AI data center under construction in Australia. Taihan will carry out the entire process — from design and material supply to construction — of a 330-kilovolt (kV) extra-high-voltage cable system on a turnkey basis.
Taihan won the project over global competitors on the strength of its extra-high-voltage cable technology and experience executing overseas projects. The company was recognized for its capabilities across the entire process, including cable quality, grid design, engineering, construction and on-site management.
The company has expanded its extra-high-voltage power grid business in the Oceania market, centered on Australia and New Zealand. It carried out a 500kV underground cable project, the highest voltage commercialized in Australia, and completed the construction of a 330kV cable system for "Powering Sydney's Future," a project to expand Sydney's power grid. It has also built a local track record through projects including 275kV and 132kV projects in Australia and a 220kV project in New Zealand.
The industry expects that as large-scale data center construction continues amid the spread of AI and cloud services, investment in the power infrastructure to support them will also increase. In particular, as demand grows for power grid construction including extra-high-voltage cables and substation facilities, order opportunities for related companies are also expected to rise.
"Because stable power supply is key for AI data centers, a high level of technology and project execution experience are required," a Taihan official said. "We plan to further expand our push into high-value-added power infrastructure markets, including global AI data centers, on the back of this contract."
