Marking June as Patriots and Veterans Month, Korea's retail industry has launched a range of social contribution activities for national merit recipients, military personnel, firefighters and police officers. The forms of support are diversifying, ranging from free health checkups to comfort goods and scholarship funds.
According to the retail industry Friday, Coupang held a free health checkup program called "Coupang On-Dongne Care" in Yeongdeok, North Gyeongsang Province, on June 24 to mark Patriots and Veterans Month. In cooperation with the Korea Central Medical Volunteer Association and others, Coupang provided health checkup services to about 500 people, including national merit recipients, local residents and children. Coupang chose Yeongdeok because the area was the site of the Battle of Yeongdeok and the Jangsa Landing Operation during the Korean War.
Support for police officers and firefighters also continued. NS Home Shopping donated a total of 100 million won, including scholarships for children of police officers killed or injured in the line of duty and support funds for firefighters, in honor of Patriots and Veterans Month. The company said the initiative aims to express gratitude to police officers and firefighters who have devoted themselves to the lives and safety of citizens, as well as their families, and to provide practical help.
Support for military personnel followed as well. Seven-Eleven donated food worth 20 million won to the Naval Education and Training Command. Lotte Wellfood visited the Army's 17th Infantry Division and delivered 2,585 boxes of comfort goods worth 200 million won. The company also cooperated with the Korean Dental Association for oral examinations and dental treatment of soldiers in remote areas, visiting the Marine Corps' 2nd Division in Ganghwa County, Incheon.
The Genesis BBQ Group visited the Imjin River Battalion of the White Horse Division in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, holding a "Visiting Chicken Relay" that delivered Golden Olive Chicken sets to 50 exemplary soldiers from riverside guard units. "Diners," a college student volunteer group of Dining Brands Group, carried out volunteer activities in Seoul, Daegu and Daejeon, including making collaborative palm-sized Taegeukgi national flag artwork and delivering carnations together with young caregivers.
