Sung finished atop the women's individual modern pentathlon final held Sept. 20 at Anjo Sports Park in Aichi Prefecture, Japan, to claim the gold.
She sealed the victory by crossing the finish line first in the closing laser run, which combines running and shooting.
Sung, who at the 2024 Paris Olympics became the first Asian female athlete to win a modern pentathlon medal with a bronze, wrote new history by taking her first individual gold at her second Asian Games. South Korean women's modern pentathlon had previously peaked at silver in Asian Games individual competition.
Modern pentathlon requires a single athlete to compete in fencing, an obstacle course, swimming and the laser run, which combines running and shooting. Because the disciplines must be completed back to back, competitors need stamina, technique and concentration alike.
