
Kim Ji-yong, the nominee to head the new Major Crimes Investigation Agency, owns two apartments in the Bundang area of Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.
According to a confirmation hearing request submitted to the National Assembly on the 2nd, Kim reported holding, under his own name, two apartments in Bundang District, Seongnam, and a half stake in jeonse rights (a lump-sum deposit lease) on an apartment in Seocho-dong, Seocho District, Seoul. Those holdings total 1.72 billion won. Including assets held by his spouse and two children, the family's reported wealth comes to 3.81 billion won ($2.7 million).
The holdings consist of an apartment in Imae-dong, Bundang District, valued at 1.17 billion won with a floor area of 84.63 square meters, and a 50% stake in an apartment in Jeongja-dong, Bundang District, valued at 870 million won with a floor area of 146.37 square meters, making him a multiple-home owner. His stake in the jeonse rights on the Seocho-dong apartment is worth 725 million won. He also reported 285.62 million won in bank deposits and a 30 million won investment in a 3.9% stake in the law firm where he works.
His spouse's assets total 2.01 billion won, including the 50% share of the Jeongja-dong apartment jointly owned with the nominee and a 50% share of the Seocho-dong jeonse rights. She holds 913.16 million won in bank deposits, 123.08 million won in stocks and 26.04 million won in virtual assets. Assets belonging to his eldest son, born in 2000, and eldest daughter, born in 2004, totaled about 52.24 million won and about 25.61 million won, respectively.
Kim also disclosed his children's plans for fulfilling military service obligations. His eldest son, classified as Grade 3 and subject to active-duty conscription, has deferred service while enrolled in university and is scheduled to report to the Army Training Center on Nov. 30 this year. Kim himself enlisted in the Army in 1988 and completed his service in 1990, discharged at the rank of sergeant.
