BUSAN — Renault Korea will build an advanced research and development complex called the Busan New Tech Center on the grounds of its Busan plant. The company aims to complete an end-to-end production ecosystem linking every stage from new vehicle development certification to final production. The strategy is to bring future mobility R&D capabilities now concentrated in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, to the Busan manufacturing site to maximize synergy between research and production.
Renault Korea announced the plan for the Busan New Tech Center on the 1st at the opening ceremony for Renault Dongnae, a flagship showroom in Busan's Dongnae District. The center, targeted to launch in the first half of next year, will relocate core future mobility functions from the existing Yongin research center — including development certification and safety testing — to Busan and equip the site with the latest facilities.
Renault Korea will spend 70 billion won ($50 million) on equipment to build 17 core R&D installations at the Busan plant, including a crash test facility, a sled impact simulator and a multipurpose environmental test chamber. The company also plans to work with the Busan city government to install additional advanced equipment outside the plant, developing Busan into a forward base for future mobility development and production.
The key to the investment is narrowing the physical distance between R&D and manufacturing. Once the New Tech Center is in place, test and certification results for new vehicles can be reflected immediately on the production floor, sharply shortening feedback cycles. Close integration of R&D and manufacturing is seen as a critical competitive edge, particularly as the emergence of electric vehicles and software-defined vehicles accelerates development cycles. Industry officials expect the Busan plant's standing to be elevated from a simple production and export base to a core hub overseeing global new vehicle development and production.
"We will build a production ecosystem in Busan that spans everything from new vehicle testing to final production," Renault Korea CEO Nicolas Paris said. "By combining top-tier development capabilities with the technological strength of the Busan plant, we will lead Busan to become a center of the future automotive industry."
Separately, Renault Korea opened Renault Dongnae in Busan's Dongnae District the same day, its second flagship showroom after Renault Seongsu, and began welcoming customers. The company also strengthened ties with the local community under the slogan "Renault, Made in Busan. Driving Busan."
