BUSAN — HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (097230) has delivered a 7,900-TEU eco-friendly container ship, reaffirming its competitiveness in the mid- to large-sized merchant vessel market. Since re-entering the merchant ship market in 2021, the company has delivered 14 mid- to large-sized eco-friendly container ships, and this year it has expanded the size of its orders to vessels of up to 10,100 TEU.
A naming ceremony for the 7,900-TEU container ship Garnet, ordered by Greek shipowner TMS, was held at the Yeongdo shipyard in Busan on the 29th, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction said on the 30th. The vessel is the fourth of eight ships the company won from a European shipowner in 2024.
The Garnet measures 272 meters in length, 42 meters in width and 20 meters in depth. Designed to improve fuel efficiency and cut carbon emissions, the vessel features an optimized hull and cargo space based on the company's proprietary three-dimensional hull design technology. The design secures greater loading efficiency within the same hull form, improving operating economics.
Since returning to the merchant ship market in 2021, HJ Shipbuilding & Construction has built its competitiveness by winning and delivering 14 eco-friendly container ships in the 5,000- to 9,000-TEU range. With tighter environmental rules making fuel efficiency and emissions reduction key factors in shipowners' ordering decisions, the company is responding to the market on the strength of its high-efficiency vessel design capabilities.
The vessels it wins are also getting larger. HJ Shipbuilding & Construction secured orders for eight 10,100-TEU eco-friendly container ships this year. By expanding its construction range to vessels one class larger than before, the company is strengthening its order-winning position in the mid- to large-sized container ship market.
The company plans to continue developing high-efficiency, eco-friendly vessels that can meet future decarbonization rules while raising the competitiveness of its merchant ship business through additional orders. "Based on advanced eco-friendly technology and differentiated construction capabilities, we will build ships that customers can trust and further solidify our standing as a global shipbuilder," said Yoo Sang-chul, CEO of HJ Shipbuilding & Construction.
