DAEGU — Kim Hyun-deok, a professor in the School of Electronic Engineering at Kyungpook National University and head of the Advanced Information and Communication Convergence Industrial Technology Institute, received a commendation from the chairman of the Presidential Committee for Decentralization and Balanced Development to mark Industrial Complex Day.
Kyungpook National University said on the 29th that the professor was recognized for leading the digital transformation and manufacturing innovation of the Seongseo Industrial Complex in Daegu by setting up a process innovation simulation center and an on-site university campus within the complex.
Since 2023, Kim has served as the head of the "AI-based process innovation simulation center construction and operation project," a core task of the smart green industrial complex promotion program, overseeing the entire process from project planning and budget securing to building the center and running corporate support services.
Among the six process innovation simulation centers nationwide, it was the only one to establish its base by purchasing and remodeling a former garment factory that had been idle or shut down inside an industrial complex.
The unused space, left neglected in the aging complex, was turned into a company-friendly open facility equipped with collaboration rooms, seminar rooms, training rooms and community rooms. About 20 core researchers from Kyungpook National University are stationed there, working with resident companies.
In addition to new equipment purchased with the project budget, 22 types of expensive equipment already owned by the university, including three-dimensional scanners and 3D printers, were moved into the complex. That completed a full-cycle support system covering data acquisition, prototype production, and measurement and inspection.
The university has expanded the area around the simulation center into the "Seongseo Industrial Complex On-Site Campus," a close-contact industry-academia cooperation model in which the university moves into the complex to identify corporate needs and provide continuous support.
"I will contribute to strengthening the competitiveness of local small and mid-sized companies by advancing the digital transformation model of the Seongseo Industrial Complex," Kim said.
