Police investigating allegations of illegal campaigning by North Chungcheong Province Governor Shin Yong-han raided the governor's office on the 28th.
According to police and provincial officials, the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crime Investigation Unit of the North Chungcheong Provincial Police Agency sent investigators to the governor's office at the provincial government building that afternoon and seized mobile phones and other related materials.
The exact grounds for the search were not disclosed, but the raid appears to be linked to allegations of illegal campaigning that surfaced during the June 3 local elections.
Shin was earlier reported to police over allegations that he used phones registered under other people's names to send large volumes of text messages soliciting support during the party primary ahead of the local elections, and that he paid an aide's salary through a company owned by a person connected to his campaign.
Shin has denied the allegations, calling them "baseless claims."
