BUSAN — The Korean Register (KR) is moving to secure specialists in future maritime technologies including artificial intelligence, nuclear-powered ships and alternative fuels. The push comes as the shipping and shipbuilding industries accelerate their digital and green transitions, with the classification society seeking to build up related technical capabilities ahead of demand.
KR said on the 28th that it will conduct its second open recruitment of entry-level and experienced staff this year. The drive covers 57 positions across 21 fields, including 54 permanent posts in 19 fields and three contract posts in two fields.
By job category, KR will hire 22 surveyors, 15 technical staff, 17 researchers and three contract workers. Surveyor positions cover hull and machinery surveys as well as inspections of submarines and diving equipment. Technical roles include hull and machinery drawing approval, classification rule development, ship cybersecurity, materials and welding, naval vessels and wind power certification.
Research positions are concentrated in future technologies. They include AI services and simulation development, AI-based engineering software development, condition-based maintenance (CBM) for machinery systems, risk assessment for nuclear-powered ships and alternative fuel research.
The recruitment is focused on staffing the technological transition and business diversification of the maritime industry. Beyond research on AI, ship cybersecurity and eco-friendly fuels, KR is expanding its workforce into new maritime fields such as nuclear ship risk assessment, submarine and diving equipment inspection, and wind power certification.
Hiring will be conducted entirely on a blind basis. After a document screening, candidates take a personality test, the National Competency Standards (NCS) basic job skills assessment, and practical and English-language interviews. Contract positions are exempt from the written tests. Successful candidates will be appointed on Jan. 1 next year after a medical examination and a check for disqualifying factors.
