SEJONG — Bae Il-kwon, 53, will take office as Sejong's new vice mayor for administrative affairs on Sept. 28.
Born in Seoul in 1972, Bae graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in sociology and earned master's degrees in public administration from Seoul National University and Syracuse University in the United States.
Bae entered public service in 1999 after passing the 42nd higher civil service examination, and has held a series of senior posts at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, including director of the global e-government division, director of the innovation planning division, planning and budget officer, and director-general of the public artificial intelligence and data bureau under the digital government innovation office.
Bae also worked in the political affairs secretary's office and the public communication secretary's office at the presidential secretariat, and served as head of the planning and coordination office for the Gwangju metropolitan government, giving Bae broad experience spanning both central and local administration.
Most recently, Bae served as the first director-general of the artificial intelligence government infrastructure bureau within the interior ministry's artificial intelligence government office.
Sejong said it expects the appointment to add momentum to the priority projects of its fifth municipal administration, including the construction of an AI-based smart administrative capital.
