A former police officer accused of killing his wife while the two were in divorce proceedings on Jeju Special Self-Governing Province has been indicted and detained pending trial.
The Criminal Division 3 of the Jeju District Prosecutors' Office said on the 21st that it had indicted the man, identified only as A, a former police officer in his 50s, on charges including robbery resulting in death and retaliatory murder under the Act on Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes.
A is accused of killing his wife with a knife at a house in Namwon-eup, Seogwipo, in the early hours of Aug. 23.
Prosecutors concluded that A acted in retaliation after the victim reported him for domestic violence in August last year, leading to an investigation and trial. Through supplementary investigation, including forensic analysis of the victim's mobile phone and a review of account transaction records, prosecutors also determined that A intended to take valuables such as jewelry, not only to retaliate. On that basis, they charged him with retaliatory murder under the special act and robbery resulting in death as concurrent offenses arising from a single act.
A prosecution official said, "We will do our utmost to sustain the prosecution and to support the victim's bereaved family."
