In a notice to the media that afternoon, the JCS said the military and the UNC conducted a joint on-site investigation, adding, "Today the on-site investigation team found one North Korean resin anti-personnel mine near the site of the explosion." It continued, "The on-site investigation team assesses that this mine is a resin anti-personnel mine different from the one described by the soldiers who took part in the operation at the time of the explosion."
Soldiers who took part in the operation had stated that during their withdrawal at the time of the incident, a brown North Korean resin anti-personnel mine resembling a North Korean wooden-box mine was found about 1 meter from the site of the first explosion.
Because the mine found in the latest search was assessed as different from the one previously described, attention is turning to whether yet another mine was present.
The JCS said, "Our military and the UNC plan to conduct further investigation and then explain the final findings to the public objectively and transparently."
