President Lee Jae-myung said on the 29th that a land mine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone must be investigated thoroughly and its circumstances disclosed transparently.
"Three soldiers were seriously wounded in the land mine accident that occurred near the Military Demarcation Line last week," Lee said at a Cabinet meeting he presided over at the Blue House. "I offer my deepest condolences to the wounded soldiers and their families."
"Through a swift and thorough investigation based on close cooperation with the United Nations Command, the truth of the incident must be disclosed transparently," he said. "We will take necessary measures in line with what the investigation finds."
Lee also said that national security transcends party lines. "I hope there will be no attempts to endanger national security by fueling groundless conspiracy theories," he said.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff said a day earlier, in an interim finding, that the explosion was "highly likely" caused by a North Korean land mine. Seven days after the incident, the military authorities said it was certain the device was not one of South Korea's own mines.
