NEW YORK — President Lee Jae-myung, in the United States to attend the U.N. General Assembly, held a separate summit with U.S. President Donald Trump on the 22nd after last-minute negotiations.
The meeting came together abruptly as talks on Korean investment in the United States, which had been stalled until just before Lee's departure, made rapid progress. The two leaders agreed to pursue investment in the United States, high-level talks on the transfer of wartime operational control, cooperation in shipbuilding and follow-up discussions on nuclear-powered submarines.
Trump also signaled a personal rapport, telling Lee they should play golf together. The two sides discussed the possibility of a round in Miami around the Group of 20 summit in December. Senior foreign policy, security and economic aides from both countries attended the meeting in large numbers.
