WASHINGTON — Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in the United States on a state visit, his first in 11 years, for a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The plane carrying Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, landed at Joint Base Andrews near Washington at about 5:40 p.m. on the 23rd. Trump and first lady Melania Trump greeted them at the airport in person.
After a brief welcoming ceremony, Xi will hold a summit with Trump at the White House at midday on the 24th. A state dinner for Xi and his wife will be held at the White House that evening, with chief executives of major technology companies from both countries expected to attend in force. Xi will wrap up the three-day visit and return home on the 25th.
It is Xi's first visit to the United States in a state capacity since 2015, during Barack Obama's presidency. His last trip to the country of any kind was three years ago, when he attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco in November 2023.
Since returning to office, Trump met Xi in Busan last October and in Beijing in May this year. Xi's current trip is a reciprocal visit following Trump's May trip to China. The length of an extension to the tariff truce and whether the two sides can agree on artificial intelligence regulation are expected to be the biggest issues in the talks.
