Land, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Hong Ji-sun visited the Bucheon Daejang public housing district, one of the government's third-phase new towns, in her first field trip on housing supply since taking office, reviewing progress on land development and home construction.
Hong told officials at the site on the 22nd that "execution matters more than planning when it comes to housing supply," urging them to move faster. She also called for close management of project timelines and construction schedules, including applying a fastest-possible construction start model to third-phase new towns, and said the ministry must deliver tangible results by closely overseeing housing supply policy as a whole, including the Aug. 13 measures. The Bucheon Daejang district is a third-phase new town project that will supply about 20,000 homes in the Daejang-dong area of Bucheon, adjacent to Seoul. Construction on the first homes began in December 2024, and 1,600 units in blocks A5 and A6 are set for their first move-ins in November next year. Wide-area transport links, including the Daejang-Hongdae rail line, and an urban high-tech industrial complex spanning about 560,000 square meters are being developed at the same time. Major companies including Korean Air, SK Innovation, SK hynix and DN Solutions plan to move into the industrial complex.
Hong toured the construction site with officials from Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH) and Bucheon Urban Corporation, asking them to ensure that essential infrastructure — transport, daily amenities, jobs, education and parks — is in place without delay by the time residents move in. The Bucheon Daejang district will also pilot intergenerational housing, in which newlyweds, older adults and other age groups live in a single complex and provide mutual care.
"Manage the project carefully so residents can actually feel intergenerational exchange and care in their daily lives," Hong said. "For the public to fully feel the results of housing supply, we must speed up projects while strictly keeping to the promised supply schedule and quality." She added, "Even as we speed up the work, manage the sites thoroughly so that there is no shoddy construction or safety accident."
